Habitat for Humantiy's Development Process

Habitat for Humanity is known throughout the world for its unique building model, in which volunteers work alongside the families who will own the completed homes. Habitat for Humanity East Bay has adapted the model to work in Bay Area's complex urban building environment.

To begin its unique development process, HFHEB asks the surrounding community to provide the donated labor, building materials, and money necessary to complete a Habitat home. The donated labor helps keep overhead costs to a minimum. Donated building materials either go directly into the homes HFHEB builds or are sold at the ReStore (Habitat's home improvement store). ReStore profits are funneled back into the organization to purchase more building materials. Donated money helps pay for the remaining expenses on each house. Together volunteers, donors, and partner families make this unique building model work.

Habitat for Humanity East Bay also strives to build all its homes "green", with environmentally friendly materials and techniques. We make homes with recycled materials, with solar panels and new techniques to conserve natural resources. Read more about our Green Building Program and how you can get involved.
