Margot and Spencer Platt
Wearing matching outfits, Margot and Spencer Platt will arrive at our Livermore development early in the morning to water the plants before construction begins. While Spencer particularly enjoys working on the roof, our construction staff knows they can count on Margot and Spencer to do any kind of work requested of them. Margot has an acute eye for what needs to get done, and once insisted on cleaning the office trailer. They are both a joy to work with, and teenage volunteers will often gravitate towards Margot her for guidance and support. Spencer entertains us with stories from his brief career in professional wrestling, which he left to pursue a degree in zoology. Our AmeriCorps crew leaders were particularly grateful when, after a build day last year, Margot and Spencer invited them over for snacks. For extending so much of yourselves to our program, please allow us to extend our heartfelt thanks to both of you!
How did you first get involved with Habitat for Humanity East Bay? To celebrate their anniversary, friends threw a party but specified "no gifts - give donations to Habitat for Humanity East Bay instead." We did and have continued our support since. When we read that Habitat was building in Livermore, just a couple miles from us, we signed on and started working once each week in January 2005.
What motivates you to continue volunteering with Habitat for Humanity East Bay?
We appreciate Habitat East Bay's culture of kindness. We look forward to our day with the great AmeriCorps guys and gals. We just plain enjoy working at jobs outside our usual activities - learning new skills and vocabulary. It's great to give something of ourselves to our community.
"We appreciate Habitat East Bay's culture of kindness. We look forward to our day with the great Americorps guys and gals." - Margot and Spencer
How does the mission and philosophy of Habitat East Bay fit in your own life values?
We love the commitment to giving, caring, and helping. Working for social and economic justice is so important to our earth's future.
What are your plans with us in the future?
More of the same but we'll have to drive farther.
"Even before we have begun giving instructions in the morning, Margot and Spencer are already off watering the trees!" - Chrissy Thomas, Site Supervisor
Tell us a little bit about yourself? Besides volunteering with HFHEB what other things do you do with your time?
We are avid bird watchers. We love to combine this with international travel particularly to the tropics. We love movies, puzzles, and reading. We also volunteer with Alameda Creek Alliance cleaning up and restoring our creeks to improve habitat for the once and future steelhead of our watershed.
