AmeriCorps Volunteer Coordinator
Position Description
East Bay Habitat for Humanity Mission Statement:
Inspired by God’s love, our mission is to create successful homeownership opportunities for families with limited incomes by building sustainable housing and revitalizing neighborhoods.
Position Summary:
The Volunteer Coordinator (VC) will serve with our clients (our partner families and our volunteers), the Director Volunteer Programs (DVP) and the construction staff to improve the volunteer program. The VC will help to recruit, retain and appreciate our volunteers.
Strategic Plan:
Develop programs and activities that are consistent with the strategic plan goals and objectives that pertain to the volunteer program.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Volunteer outreach:
- Recruit volunteers from the local communities where EBH is building.
- Manage communication with the local campus chapters and work to form new campus chapters.
- Update volunteer recruitment centers listings on EBH. Create new volunteer job descriptions for ongoing volunteer opportunities and special opportunities.
- Create and maintain all marketing materials for the volunteer program (both paper and web based).
- Work with the DVP to create the monthly volunteer e-news.
Volunteer program:
- Conduct monthly Habitat tour – first Saturday of the month.
- Conduct new volunteer orientations at the start of each new project and at the monthly tours.
- Enter volunteer profile information on new volunteers.
- Contact interested volunteers, orient them to the volunteer program (volunteer HUB) and coordinate their volunteerism (both on the building site and other volunteer opportunities).
- Reminder emails to volunteers.
- Follow-up calls to new volunteers after their first workday.
- Record volunteer hours worked at all sites and provide quarterly activity reports to the DVP
- Coordinate group volunteer and fundraising activities
Volunteer appreciation and retention:
- Organize the annual volunteer appreciation party
- Identify outstanding volunteers, interview them and submit an article for the website / newsletter
- Track individual volunteer’s commitment level and encourage regular volunteerism
- Work to retain valuable volunteers, i.e. skilled builders, regulars, midweekers, etc.
Events: Collegiate Challenge (CC) and Build-A-Thon (BAT):
- CC: Coordinate pre-event communication and logistics and clearly communicate the expectations of EBH to each group
- CC: Coordinate housing, showers and all other logistics with the groups during their weeks
- BAT: Coordinate marketing, recruitment, registration and pledge collection
- BAT: Coordinate lunch donations from businesses and faith communities
- BAT: Help with onsite logistics before and during the event
- Help with other EBH events as needed
Construction Site:
- Welcome new homeowners and volunteers and orient them to EBH answering questions on EBH policy and programs
- Help to create a work environment that is cheerful, productive and inclusive of all (homeowners, regular volunteers, new volunteers and staff)
- Manage volunteer program tasks on site (volunteer sign-in, nametags and vip name badges, volunteer orientation, information table and bulletin board, first aid supplies, etc.)
- Lead lunchtime Q&A info session on EBH
- Sell Habitat T-shirts and other merchandise to volunteers
Time Commitment:
Full-time. Tuesday – Friday (9 AM – 5 PM) and Saturday on the Construction Site (8 AM – 4:30 PM). Frequent evening and weekend meetings required. 40 hours per week.
Reports directly to: Director of Volunteer Programs, Dept: Development
Evaluations:
Written performance reviews will be provided in accordance with AmeriCorps and EBH policy
Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills:
- Minimum requirement is High School diploma or GED. Some college is desired.
- Experience with Habitat for Humanity is helpful.
- Experience working with diverse groups of volunteers.
- Experience with public speaking.
- Experience in fundraising.
- Experience in volunteer coordination.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
Personal vehicle required:
Yes (Strongly Recommended). Frequent evening and weekends required. May require travel throughout Alameda and Western Contra Costa County.
