Earth Day Build-A-Thon 2007 began with a bang with over 100 participants pounding nails on April 19th. Not even the drizzle and mud could dampen spirits as volunteers and Habitat partner families worked together to begin construction of eight new homes. Four days of building culminated in eight framed homes, capped with roof trusses.

The sight of six completed Habitat homes across the street lended inspiration - as a result of the accelerated build, the families will soon welcome many new neighbors to their Habitat community. “This feat would not have been possible without volunteer labor, donated materials and event sponsors,” said architect Gary Struthers, who donated his time to design the development and lead construction as a house leader. Event sponsors were PMI, PG&E, Shaklee, and media sponsor CW Bay Area. House sponsors included Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Cal Habitat for Humanity, San Francisco Foundation, and Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

The Cal Berkley Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter became HEB's first student quarter-house sponsor, having raised $25,000. The ambitous members fo the chapter have pledged to double their efforts, embarking on the fundraising necessary to become a half-house sponsor. The chapter sent strong teams on Saturday and Sunday, to contirbute to "The House that Cal Built" alongside future homeowners Jesus and Susan Salazar and their four children. “I am so happy that we were chosen and given this opportunity,” said Jesus. “We are looking forward to meeting our new friends who were also lucky to have been chosen.”

The Lutheran community joined together to completely frame the Thrivent Builds home, sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Members from Epiphany Lutheran Church of San Leandro, Our Savior Lutheran Ministries of Livermore, Prince of Peace Church of Fremont, Resurrection Lutheran Church of Dublin, and Trinity Lutheran Church of Pleasanton pounded nails alongside Sonnie Dae and her family, the future homeowners.

While framing is complete, much work remains to complete the houses. Please volunteer with us again!
