Thomas Weast

This spring, when one of our homes under construction was partially destroyed by fire, volunteer Thomas Weast stepped up to lead the efforts of rebuilding the "Phoenix Home," bringing it back up to schedule. As a licensed contractor and master carpenter, Thomas' professional skills have been an incredible asset, contributing to our quick pace of construction at the Edes Avenue development. "Thomas Weast is amazing," notes Site Superintendent Ben Grubb. "He has given selflessly of his time, and is a gentle presence on site." AmeriCorps Crew Leader John Barker remarks that "while working with Thomas to rebuild the Calderon family's home, I was impressed with his ability to remain patient and approachable while working at a production-framing pace." Thomas adds to not only the quality of building, but the quality of experience on the construction site as well. John adds that, "learning from outstanding volunteers like Thomas is one of the best parts of the Habitat experience for partner families, volunteers, and AmeriCorps members."

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What’s your day job? Besides work and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity East Bay what other things do you do with your time?
As a matter of fact for my day job I am a carpenter and a class B general contractor. I am a long distance runner, and I enjoy watching baseball and growing vegetables.

How did you first get involved with Habitat East Bay?
I was looking for something more meaningful to do with my time, that would allow me to make a contribution to a socially-responsible endeavor. I had heard about Habitat on the news for years, so I went on-line and tracked it down.

What motivates you to continue with Habitat East Bay?
I feel there is a sense of purpose at Habitat and I enjoy the personal connection that I experience with the homeowners, AmeriCorps members and the Site Supervisors.

Why do you make volunteering for Habitat for Humanity East Bay a priority?
I feel we are all our brothers' keepers. I need to serve others how I can and where I can. Building happens to be what I know how to do.

What have been your most memorable experiences?
My most memorable experience at Habitat has been reframing the “Phoenix House” with two of my oldest and dearest friends.

What are your future projects or goals at Habitat East Bay?
I would like to finish framing the remaining houses at the Edes Avenue development.

If you could be a tool, what would you be and why?
I would be a hammer, so I could hammer out justice and freedom.

What is your favorite job on the construction site?
Framing roofs and working way up high.

What is it like working side by side with families who are completing their sweat equity hours?
I find it richly rewarding to be honored with the opportunity to work for a client who is willing to get his hands dirty, working side by side with me. I feel proud to serve the homeowners.

Thomas's patience

I totally endorse the printed description given for Thomas, especially the patient part. I count the day, July 18, I spent assisting him on the Phoenix House, as a great experience with a master carpenter. He directed a group of 3 amateur helpers in the framing of a second story floor and wall and was very resourceful in adapting the work to correct for a stud cutting error. I felt the day was very productive and H4H and I benefitted from it. Thank you Thomas.
