Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative

Habitat for Humanity East Bay has been selected as one of the top affiliates in the nation to participate in a new and innovative national program called the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI).  As a partner in the program, Habitat East Bay will receive Strategic Investment Grants (SIG) to make an impact in East Bay communities as a part of a broader national effort to strengthen community outreach and development efforts, community-based partnerships, and program evaluation techniques.

More Community Solutions

In order to create a larger impact on housing issues across the nation, the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative will deliver a wider array of housing solutions, including new house construction, vacant house rehabilitation, home repair and weatherization, housing counseling services, and policy advocacy. All of these tools lead to:

  • A significant and permanent increase in the capacity of Habitat for Humanity both nationally and locally. Developing core competency in rehabs and other housing products within the affiliate community.
  • A higher quality of life for families in the NRI target communities.
  • A broader-based financial support network for Habitat for Humanity affiliates; creating a wider and more financially sustainable portfolio of programs.
  • Affiliates increasing the number of volunteers, the number of hours volunteers work, and the variety of opportunities available to them, including advocacy and non-construction opportunities.

More Local Families Served

The Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative will support affiliates and inspire them to serve more families in their local service areas by responding to community needs with an expanded array of products, services and partnerships.  Here in the East Bay, the program will mobilize Habitat East Bay to deliver an unprecedented level of support and partnership with communities seeking to enhance their long-term sustainability. Rehabilitation and repair efforts of homes, weatherization of existing homes to improve energy efficiency of existing homes, and forming partnerships with community organizations will help increase the number of families served.

Habitat East Bay is thrilled about the opportunity to bring all of its vast resources and partnerships together to transform and revitalize communities.

Habitat East Bay will use its scope, scale and expertise to solidify itself as a leader of community stabilization activities in the Bay Area, expanding its participation in Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Neighborhood Stabilization Program as well.

Stronger Local Communities

Habitat believes that with stronger families come stronger communities, and that is what the NRI program aims to create. The program will target communities that are under stress due to vacant properties, home maintenance needs, and the economic recession.  By collaborating with other local organizations on strategic community planning and by providing a broader range of housing interventions, families in these communities will have a wider array of services to create long-term solutions for their needs.
