Lead Abatement Update

First a big thank you to Monica Mack, who wrote the Week 6 blog while I was on vacation, and to Diane Agnone for getting it to Andrew at HEB for posting!

It’s been six weeks since we last worked at the Bonifacio house in Concord, and we’re missing it big time!  However, the long-awaited lead abatement work by the specialist contractor is underway, and we hope to be back to work soon.  I stopped by the house a few days ago, and was excited to see that the old windows and front door are gone and new ones are in their place!  A peek in the garage window revealed that the lead-painted paneling is gone, too.  I couldn’t see if the kitchen tile counters were removed, but that’s another of the lead-abatement tasks.  When the site is opened to volunteers again (likely within the next few weeks), Women’s Crew members will get an email, and the online signups for Bonifacio will be available on the Habitat East Bay website.  I’ll also write a quick blog announcing the good news, so check back here.  Word has it that some of the tasks we’ll be working on when the site is reopened are exterior painting, landscaping, and installing kitchen cabinets and countertops.

In the past few weeks the neighbor to the west (on the left as you face the house) cut down a tall redwood tree on his side of the backyard fence.  The tree was so close to the fence that another tree had grown from its root system on our side of the fence, right up against it.  He cut down that tree as well, and has replaced the two sections of the fence he had to take down to do the work.  He did a nice job and, although we’re disappointed to have lost some shade, he took care of a tree that was damaging the fence and would have become a larger problem for our Habitat homeowners over the years.

We hope to know soon about the Habitat family who will join us to finish the rehab and call it their home when we’re done!  Meanwhile, take a look at the photos of our work from Week 1 at the online Bonifacio scrapbook.
