Habitat for Humanity East BayVeronica started volunteering at the ReStore in March 2010, and she immediately put her previous retail and service experiences to work. In her four months of weekly service, she has created a better inventory tracking spreadsheet, sorts nuts and bolts, and keeps things clean behind the check-out counter.
"She’s one of the sharpest tools in our box" says Frank Atkins, ReStore Manager. Veronica's service demonstrates the great impact that consistently good volunteers have on the quality of our service.
ReStore Coordinator Adrionna Fike praises Veronica's efforts, noting that "she’s great because she makes other volunteers better. She helps our staff shine brighter. We know that when Veronica comes to work something fantastic will manifest by the end of the day."
Beyond the ReStore, Veronica dedicates her time to the construction site as well. Her dedication to the various aspects of HEB has made our community stronger. Read more about Veronica's contributions below!
Tell us a little bit about yourself? What’s your day job? Besides volunteering with Habitat for Humanity East Bay what other things do you do with your time?My name is Khishignyam Altangerel but people call me Veronica since it is easier. I am originally from Mongolia. During the day I work at 3D Remodeling, Inc. as a Kitchen/Bath designer and on the weekends I work at Romano's Macaroni Grill in Dublin as a server. For free time I volunteer with Habitat for Humanity East Bay.
How did you first get involved with Habitat East Bay?When I was studying architecture at Chabot College I heard about this place where they build houses for low-income families. Then after I finished with college I had free time so I decided to volunteer. I went to the construction site and ReStore and I loved both places so I kept coming back.
What is your current role and level of involvement with us?As of right now I volunteer at the Edes Avenue development constructing homes. I also work at the ReStore as a Team Leader and doing customer service for two to three days a week.
What motivates you to continue with Habitat East Bay?The most important motive for me is that the people at the ReStore and on the construction site as well as the main office are really nice and they make me feel like we are one family reaching out to the community and helping people in need. I really enjoy the experience I gain everyday and meeting more wonderful people.
Why do you make volunteering for Habitat for Humanity East Bay a priority?Because as a young person just starting to build my own career, I find the experiences that I am getting here at Habitat would help me throughout my lifetime.
What have been your most memorable experiences?Being honored by the staff here at Habitat East Bay.
What are your future projects or goals at HEB?I would love to keep volunteering with HEB if my time allows.
How does the mission and philosophy of HEB fit in your own life values?I believe in Karma and as a part of that belief that "whatever goes around comes around." I would like to help people as much as I can with my work and hopefully if my time comes, others will do the same.
If you could be a tool what would you be and why?
If I could be a tool I would be a tool belt, because I don't want to be just one tool that is limited to do only one job, I want to be all. The tool belt carries the most important tolls that are necessary to build, fix, and remodel a house. I believe the tool belt symbolizes my time with Habitat and being part of a team.
What is your favorite job on the construction site and at the ReStore?I actually love everything about construction. I love doing things with my hands and love every aspect of it. At the ReStore I get to organize and it is great to meet people who are donating items to a better cause and helping the community.
What is it like working side by side with families who are completing their sweat equity hours? They are great people. I really enjoy meeting them. They are putting in their labor to build these houses which inspires us all.
