Habitat for Humanity East Bay
While Steve Elliott has been involved with Habitat for Humanity East Bay for many years. Recently, he has heightened his involvement by stepping up to lead a collaborative fundraising and volunteer effort among several churches. This past summer, Steve approached Habitat East Bay with a proposal to bring together United Methodist Churches throughout the East Bay to sponsor one of our rehab homes, and he has since lead the efforts of several churches to provide the funds and labor needed to fully renovate a home in Livermore.
One day while out for a jog, Doug Radigan decided to pursue a different hobby. “I’ve never actually enjoyed jogging, but I didn't want to just quit, because jogging is one of those things that seems like a good habit.” Doug confessed, “I told myself I could only quit if I found something else worthwhile to do, like volunteering."
And so Doug came to Habitat for Humanity East Bay, where he serves as an office volunteer two days each week. “To this day I never go anywhere faster than a dignified shuffle,” Doug remarks with a wink.
Terry Gleason has been an incredible supporter of Habitat for Humanity through the years, not only here in the East Bay, but throughout the country and abroad as well! Terry's support on the construction site has been invaluable, and his enthusiasm and leadership adds to the quality of our homes and to the experience of everyone who works with him.
Inspired by President Obama’s call to service, Vann Ferber decided to volunteer her time at Habitat for Humanity East Bay. In addition to her office volunteer role, Vann recently stepped up to a greater challenge by working with Donor Development Officer, Sue Howell on the Build the Dream Brunch. Not only did she help with event follow-up, but she was an integral part of the planning committee.
This spring, when one of our homes under construction was partially destroyed by fire, volunteer Thomas Weast stepped up to lead the efforts of rebuilding the "Phoenix Home," bringing it back up to schedule. As a licensed contractor and master carpenter, Thomas' professional skills have been an incredible asset, contributing to our quick pace of construction at the Edes Avenue development. "Thomas Weast is amazing," notes Site Superintendent Ben Grubb. "He has given selflessly of his time, and is a gentle presence on site." AmeriCorps Crew Leader John Barker remarks that "while working with Thomas to rebuild the Calderon family's home, I was impressed with his ability to remain patient and approachable while working at a production-framing pace." Thomas adds to not only the quality of building, but the quality of experience on the construction site as well. John adds that, "learning from outstanding volunteers like Thomas is one of the best parts of the Habitat experience for partner families, volunteers, and AmeriCorps members."
