Habitat for Humanity East Bay
BAY POINT -- Dick Rockwell maneuvers a pair of long two-by-fours through half-built hallways on his way to the back of the house. He measures and cuts, then hammers the wood into the frame of what will be a new room in this Harbor Road home.
Rockwell began volunteering with Habitat for Humanity East Bay after retiring from a 40-year legal career.
That was 17 years ago. And he's still going strong...
If any single person embodies Habitat East Bay's mission, it's Rebecca del Carmen – fondly known as Carmelita. Simply listing her involvement with Habitat East Bay is exhausting – yet every phone call, car ride, handmade tamale, and emcee gig is accomplished with care, thoughtfulness, and joy. Whatever it may be, Carmelita can always be relied on to go the distance in supporting the heart of the Habitat mission – our homeowners.
Marvin So is as dedicated and enthusiastic a volunteer as we have ever had. His obvious conviction and insightful comments are both moving and thought provoking. If you read only one Volunteer of the Month profile this month, make it this one!
The only complaint we have about Larry is how difficult is to only briefly summarize his contributions to Habitat. He has been volunteering with Habitat since 1990, participated in various Build-a-Thons, been a passionate advocate for our mission of providing affordable home ownership opportunities to our neighbors, participated in numerous Global Village trips – the list goes on and on. Both on the worksite and behind the scenes, Larry is a fixture in our Habitat family.
Simply looking at Larry’s years of service, serious dedication to Habitat’s mission, and time spent digging foundations in tropical nations in Habitat’s name is enough to impart exhaustion on most of us mere mortals. Yet some light sleuthing has revealed that “exhaustion” is not a word one thinks of in association with Larry. During his last Global Village trip to El Salvador, his energy and enthusiasm were so prevalent that they oozed from the worksite and into after-hours. Global Village trip leader Jen Golike disclosed: “he is a card shark and wanted to play games every night after dinner. And, despite being the oldest on the team, he was always one of the last to head to bed.” He was also noted to be an exceptionally hard worker and an admirable travel companion – particularly when it came to roughing it through the jungle mud! The key to Larry’s seemingly endless energy seems to lie in his devotion to the people behind our mission; that is, the motivation to serve the humanity behind the homes, the same which drives our organization. It is because of this devotion that we are honored to have him as our Featured Volunteer for December 2010.
Don’t let Dave Rosenberg fool you. He would have you believe he is a simple man in an undeserving role. When informed that he had been chosen as the volunteer of the month, Dave humbly insisted that “I know that there are many other folks that I work with regularly at HFH that are much more deserving…so November must be a very lean month for you!” Not true, Dave! Just ask Construction Manager Ben Grubb, who shares that “Dave is a skilled carpenter and a part of a group of skilled volunteers who act as a sort of Swat Team for us. I have always found Dave to be even-keeled and amenable. It means a lot to me to have him out here.” Thank you, Dave, for your significant contributions to Habitat for Humanity East Bay.
