The temperatures continued to climb today into the 90's, but it did not stop the 250 builders on the construction site. Build-A-Thon participants and Habitat homeowners were well-equipped with water, Gatorade, sunscreen, sprinklers, and lunchtime water activities in order to stay cool.
The challenges of day three were met with a community force that refused to quit under the intense pressure from the heat. In the opening remarks for the day Hans Reuvekamp, Habitat East Bay director, warned participants of the heat and set out realistic goals for the day. "In the face of the heat today, our goal is to get done what we can get done. But, the ultimate goal is to stay hydrated, cool, and don't rush yourself. Make sure even the tough guys on your house are taking water breaks."
The 20 Habitat homes continued to take shape as participants started laying the second floor decking and standing the second story walls on many of the homes. As the homes take shape, it is hard to think that just three days ago the site was nothing more than 20 concrete slabs, with an asphalt road through the middle. By the end of 2009 this land that just two years ago was an auto salvage yard will have fully transformed into a thriving community.
