Habitat for Humanity East BayHabitat East Bay is in the process of applying for LEED for homes - a national green building rating score. Read more.
Habitat for Humanity East Bay emphasizes sustainability as part of its mission. In order to meet the goal of designing and building sustainable houses, we used LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) guidelines in order to chart our progress and quantify our success in staying true to this part of our mission on three homes in our latest completed building site of 26 homes on Edes Avenue. We are nearing the completion of the LEED certification for these two, three, and four bedroom homes.
Our current 28 home site that is under construction, also at Edes Avenue, is following the same model as well as participating in the LEED ND program, which implements sustainable neighborhood development.
LEED for Homes helps guide us to provide efficient, healthy, and comfortable homes for our homeowners. In addition, our homeowners benefit from the energy efficiency and effective water usage that we build into the homes by contributing to money savings in utilities. Through the efforts of building to LEED for Homes standards, our East Bay affiliate is also a role model for other Habitat affiliates interested in building to higher green standards.
We choose LEED for homes as our guideline because it is an excellent tool to measure our progress in green building. It is a nationally recognized certification through the United States Green Building Council, which allows us to demonstrate our success on a national level with a system that is used across the country. In addition, LEED for homes holds applicants accountable at a variety of levels (Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum). Our goal for the homes that we are certifying through LEED at our completed Edes Avenue site is to achieve LEED Silver. For the second phase of the development under construction at Edes Avenue, we intend to aim our sites higher, so that we can continue to improve our green building practices and make our homes and communities even more sustainable.
